Phytoalexins are low molecular weight compounds that are synthesized in plants as part of an intricate defense system against external stress (microbial, oxidative, extreme temperature, UV etc) to prevent disease. Stilbenoid phytoalexins are an important class of polyphenolic phytoalexins characterized by a rigid 14-carbon structure and have been demonstrated to possess many intriguing biological activities in vivo including anti-cancer, anti-inflammation, antioxidant, neuro-protection, as well as anti-aging. Along with these unique biological activities, the stilbenoid-phytoalexin scaffold provides enormous structural diversity. For these reasons stilbenoid phytoalexins represent a highly promising field for the discovery of new and differentiated therapeutics for major unmet medical needs. The Company is currently advancing two technologies derived from naturally occurring stilbenoids. These technologies are RLV-102, an intestinal-specific treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as well as a topically delivered treatment for inflammatory skin diseases, and RLV-147 as a treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases as well as neuro-degenerative conditions.
